From Amherst Effective Altruism in Partnership with One for the World
Dr. Harrison and Dr. Laing join us to talk about the importance of 'one health,' where we consider animal and human health systems together-- especially relevant as most experts agree SARS-CoV-2 likely started in animals.
Harrison is CEO of Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) and a leading figure in public and animal health. Laing is an epidemiologist and SCI's One Health advisor. SCI is one of the most effective charities, working on deworming projects in Africa.

In the time of uncertainty and anxiety, poetry brings us hope, inspiration and reflection. Have you been reading or writing poems in the pandemic? Do you want to share the lines you've read or written with the Amherst community? Please fill out the form: https://forms.gle/AqT9ofE76gL9edCp6 or email your response to Haoran Tong '23 at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We welcome all students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents of Amherst College to participate! Help us lead a poetic life to overcome the difficult circumstances. We plan to compile all submissions into an anthology titled "Amherst Poetry in the Pandemic."
This year to close out Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Peer Advocates have created Lights On for SAAMherst, a 24-hour Instagram story campaign. Starting at 7 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, April 30, until 7 p.m. on Friday, May 1, our goal is to “light up” Instagram by having members of our community post a photo or video of a lit candle to their Instagram story.
The purpose of the candles is to show our support for survivors and represent how we are “shining a light” on the topic of SAAM and issues of sexual violence. In lighting up Instagram and seeing candles on each others’ stories, we hope to create a warm, supportive space and sense of community. By having our #LightOn for each other, we are showing our love, support, and care for one another and reminding ourselves that we are not alone!
Here’s how you can participate!
- Any time after 7 p.m. (EST) on April 30 until 7 p.m. on Friday, May 1, post a photo or video of a lit candle to your Instagram story with the #LightsOnforSAAMherst.
- You can leave it at that, write anything else you want to add or answer the prompt: "My light is on for/because…"
- If you tag the PAs (@amherst_pa), we will add your post anonymously (with your name blacked out) to a collection of candles from everyone who tags us on our own story!
We hope you will join us in lighting up Instagram for survivors and each other for Lights On for SAAMherst! We can’t wait to see all of your posts and candles bringing warmth, light and hope to our community!
