The Pindar Field dinners began in January 2013 with a goal of stimulating academic and cultural dialogue beyond the classroom environment. Students from disparate majors are invited to small gatherings and encouraged to engage outside of their comfort zones and traditional social groups — all supported by specially designed menus in a sophisticated environment.

The Pindar Field dinners provide a unique opportunity for students to attend an intimate, elegant dinner and enjoy a refined, four-course meal. Students arrive at 6:30 p.m. for a social reception with passed hors d’ouevres and are seated at 7 p.m. The evening begins with a brief talk by an invited speaker, and the serving of each course follows. At the end of the evening, during dessert, the chef explains the intention behind the selection of food and drinks, and the local food sourcing and preparation techniques, and then visits each table to engage with guests. The event usually concludes by 9:30 p.m.

The Pindar Field dinner series is named in honor of Reverend Pindar Field, one of two members of the first graduating class of Amherst College, and is sponsored by the President’s Office and planned by the Office of Conferences and Special Events.
