In Memory

Wayne Dorman died in Chevy Chase, Md., on July 1, 2011.

A native of the Washington, D.C., area, Wayne was an Eagle Scout who entered Amherst in 1938 after graduating from Western High School. At Amherst, he joined Chi Psi and participated in track his freshman and sophomore years, earning his freshman numerals.

After graduation, Wayne was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy Reserve and spent the next four years as a gunnery officer on destroyers in the Pacific. He was serving on the USS Callaghan when it was sunk by a kamikaze off Okinawa in July 1945.

Upon separation from the service in March 1946, Wayne married Nancy Robinson. During their more than 65 years of marriage, they had three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Wayne was particularly proud of the fact that one of his granddaughters, Sabrina Dorman, graduated from Amherst in 2009.

Wayne had a long and successful career in the life-insurance field. In 1946, he joined the Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Co., subsequently serving as its branch manager in Silver Spring, Md., and Atlanta. In December 1953, he became affiliated with the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co. and served as its general agent in D.C. until his retirement in 1984.

Not satisfied with retired life, he continued his active business career for many years as head of the Washington Pension Center, Inc., an employee benefit consulting firm.

After his final retirement, Wayne and Nancy enjoyed living in the D.C. area, feeling fortunate that their children were nearby.

For recreation, they enjoyed traveling as well as cruising and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay in their sailboat. Wayne was also active with the American Cancer Society and the Kiwanis of D.C.

Wayne is survived by his wife, their three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
