50th Reunion Book Entry

In Memory

George Michael “Mike” Crothers was living in St. Augustine, Fla. He died after a lengthy illness. He grew up in New York City and attended the Birch Wathen School. While an undergraduate at the College, he met Wendy Pinkhan, who was attending Smith.

They fell deeply in love and were married on Dec. 28, 1956. They enjoyed nearly 59 years of marriage.

Mike served in the naval reserves for three years before beginning a career as a writer and editor. His job assignments included positions at the Springfield Union in Springfield, Mass.; Medical Economics in Oradel, N.J.; the Berkshire Life Insurance Co. in Pittsfield, Mass.; and Consumers Union in Mt. Vernon, N.Y. In his last position, he took great pride in writing the yearly Buyer’s Guide for Consumer Reports magazine.

Mike’s passions included puzzles, books and especially tennis. He and Wendy retired to St. Augustine in 1999, where they enjoyed the tennis and found a wonderful community of friends.

Following three years in the Navy, Mike Crothers worked for two years as a reporter for the Springfield (Mass.) Union and Republican, six years as writer and editor for Medical Economics magazine in Oradell, N.J., two years as editor of publications for the Berkshire Life Insurance Company in Pittsfield, Mass., and 30 years as writer and editor for Consumer Reports magazine, during which time he and his wife Wendy (nee Pinkham, Smith '56) lived in Congers, N.Y. Since 1999, they've lived in St. Augustine, Fla., encouraging their four children and eight grandchildren to visit at every chance.

(By the way, having just noticed your e-mail address) I'm prompted to tell you that my second oldest granddaughter, Michelle Crothers, has elected Tufts as her college of choice and has been accepted for the class beginning next fall. Also, for what it's worth, I attach a photo of Wendy and me and our four kids taken here in August at a family reunion.)
