Emily Gold Boutilier has been named college editor and the editor of this magazine. She comes to Amherst from the Brown Alumni Magazine, where she held the position of senior writer. During her seven years at Brown, Boutilier wrote articles on topics ranging from brain surgery to Hurricane Katrina and the war in Iraq. Her 2002 cover story on a U.S. government lawyer was singled out for excellence in a Folio: magazine review of the Brown publication and has been required reading in at least two graduate courses. The editors of Newsweek named the Brown magazine the best alumni magazine in the country for 2002.
Boutilier believes that a college magazine should be lively, engaging and thoughtful. She received her undergraduate degree in history and journalism from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Before arriving at Brown, she was a newspaper reporter in Massachusetts and Virginia. She was raised outside of Washington, D.C., and now lives in Amherst with her husband, Rob, and 2-year-old daughter, Samantha.
