- The Department of Classics dedicated its Reading Room in Grosvenor House to R. Ross Holloway ’56. A professor emeritus and former director of what is now the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University, Holloway donated a major portion of his archaeological library to the Reading Room in 2009.
- President Anthony W. Marx has joined an American Academy of Arts and Sciences commission aimed at bolstering teaching and research in the liberal arts. Among the other members of the Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences are New York Times columnist David Brooks, documentary director and producer Ken Burns, musician and songwriter Emmylou Harris, retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter and Amherst Trustee Danielle S. Allen, a professor of political science at the Institute for Advanced Study.
- Deborah Gewertz, the G. Henry Whitcomb 1874 Professor of Anthropology, and her husband and research collaborator, Frederick Errington, a professor emeritus at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., have been jointly named honorary fellows of the Association of Social Anthropologists in Oceania.
- John E. Drabinski, visiting associate professor of black studies, has taken over as co-editor, with Oklahoma City University Professor Scott Davidson, of the Journal of French and Francophone Philosophy. The publication—previously called the Journal of French Philosophy and, before that, Bulletin de la Société Américaine de Philosophie de Langue Française—has changed from a subscription-only print publication to an open-source, open-access online publication.
- For demonstrating good stewardship in the recent renovations to several dorms, Amherst is one of 19 educational institutions in the state to be honored with a 2011 Paul E. Tsongas Award from the nonprofit Preservation Massachusetts.
- John Carter, the college’s chief of police since 1998, was elected director-at-large for the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. Carter’s three-year term begins in June.
- The Amherst College Library has announced that alumni are now welcome to use its subscription to JSTOR, an online scholarly database. The subscription includes the digitized archives of hundreds of academic journals across the humanities, social sciences and sciences. Go to www.amherst.edu/library/services/acalumni for details.
- Austin Sarat, the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Science, received the Lasting Contribution Award from the American Political Science Association’s Law and Courts section for his scholarly article “The Emergence and Transformation of Disputes: Naming, Blaming, Claiming.” He shares the award with co-authors William L.F. Felstiner and Richard L. Abel.
