It is with sadness that we note the sudden passing of Merle Ivone Barriga Ramirez, Five College Fellow in our Theater and Dance Department, on April 11, 2013. She had been at Amherst College since July 2012.

Barriga earned her bachelor of arts degree in theatre arts, with an emphasis in theatre direction, from the University of São Paulo in 2002. She was awarded a master of arts degree from the same school in 2006, after writing her dissertation, “Artur Barrio’s Actions: A non-representational model for the contemporaneous performer.” She was pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and, during her time at Amherst, was writing her dissertation, “Performing Indigeneity: The performative dimension of racial formations in Puckllay.”
