Amherst College notes the passing of Bekki Lee on Oct. 12, 2013. Lee served the Amherst community for 23 years in various roles in the Dean of Students' Office and the Career Center. Lee's husband, David Hansen, was Amherst's Deutch Professor of Chemistry. In 2009, Lee and her family moved to California, where she became dean of students and vice president of student affairs at Scripps College.

Amherst College President Biddy Martin and Dean of the Faculty Gregory Call sent the following message to Amherst's faculty and staff on Oct. 13:

Dear Colleagues,

We are deeply saddened to inform you of the sudden passing of Bekki Lee, our much admired friend and former colleague. Tragically, Bekki suffered a massive stroke on Friday and passed away yesterday in California.

With her characteristic warmth, strength and humor, Bekki astutely guided thousands of Amherst students during her exemplary 23-year career in the Dean of Students office and later in the Career Center.  It was a great loss to our community when Bekki, her husband, David Hansen, Deutch Professor of Chemistry, and their daughters, Emily and Nicole, decided to move to the Claremont Colleges in 2009 where Dave was appointed the Weinberg Family Dean of Science and Bekki would become the Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Affairs at Scripps College.

There will be a community gathering at Scripps College this evening at 6:30 Pacific time. We've included below the note Scripps College President Lori Bettison-Varga sent to her community yesterday.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Dave, Emily and Nicole.

Biddy and Greg
