Irene Rothberg (1913–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of Irene Rothberg on May 30, 2012. Rothberg came to the college in 1977 as department secretary and assistant to the chair of the Department of Theater and Dance, and she worked there until her retirement in 1997.

Donald S. Pitkin (1922–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of Professor Emeritus of Anthropology Donald S. Pitkin on May 11, 2012. Pitkin introduced anthropology to the Amherst curriculum when he joined the faculty in 1964. He retired from the college in 1992.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. on Sept. 8, 2012, in Johnson Chapel.

Paul Herrmann (1955–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of Paul Herrmann on Saturday, January 28, 2012. Mr. Herrmann was the husband of Alice Herrmann, administrative assistant of the Annual Fund.

Calling hours will be held Friday, Feb. 3, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Wrisley Funeral Home, Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield, with services at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Candi Ashenden officiating. An obituary with more information is available here.

Shirley Moores (1930–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of retired employee Shirley Moores on Jan. 25, 2012. Moores first came to the college in 1953 and worked for the Alumni Council for seven years before moving to Frost Library, where she worked in Technical Services until her retirement in 1998. She continued working at  Frost on a casual basis for several years after her official retirement.

Helen Mottla (1920–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of retired employee Helen Mottla on Jan. 3, 2012. Mottla arrived at the college in 1966 as a secretary for The Journal of Economic History. That same year, she began working as secretary to the Department of Biology. In 1979, she became secretary to the Dean of Students, a position she kept until her retirement in 1994.

Jeannette Mailloux (d. 2011)

Amherst College notes the passing of retired employee Jeannette Mailloux on Aug. 29, 2011. Mailloux came to the college in 1961 as a maid and moved to Valentine Hall in 1971, where she worked as a server until her retirement in 1979. She was the widow of Frederick Mailloux, also a retiree of the college, and among her three children is Ron Mailloux, who worked for Custodial Services for many years.

Zuhdo Jusufovich (d. 2011)

Amherst College notes the passing of Zuhdo Jusufovich on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011. Jusufovich came to Amherst in 2003 and worked as a custodian up until the time of his death. Before coming to the college, he had worked as an electrician and a teacher. He is survived by his son, Elvedin.

Angelo Vassallo (1947–2011)

Amherst College notes the passing of Angelo Vassallo on April 18, 2011. Vassallo came to the College in 1981 and worked  as a custodian until his retirement in 2010. Vassallo also filled in other areas across campus, as a mail clerk, as a caretaker in Athletics, as a groundskeeper and as a truck driver. Vassallo was also an honorary member of the Class of 2004.

Theodore Cross '46 (1924–2010)

Amherst College notes the passing of Theodore Cross '46, a life trustee of Amherst College and the grandfather of two current students. Cross, who passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, was the editor of The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education and a renowned photographer. A memorial service tentatively scheduled for April 9  in the Princeton University Chapel.

James M. Mullins III (d. 2009)

Amherst Colleges notes the passing of James Marcus Mullins III. Mullins, the son of Physical Education Department Coordinator Pamela Guyott, passed away unexpectedly at Brigham and Women’s Hospital on Sunday December 13, 2009 following surgery. He is survived by his wife Sarah (Lapuc) Mullins and his two children James Patrick and Peyton.
