AMHERST, Mass.— David F. Padowitz, assistant professor of biology chemistry at Amherst College, will give the annual Max and Etta Lazerowitz Lecture on Thursday, March 23, at 4 p.m. in the Alumni House of Amherst College, on "Molecules in Image and Imagination." The lecture and a reception following are free and the public is invited.
"The ability to see and move individual atoms has provoked tremendous interest," says Padowitz, a physical chemist who specializes in materials science. His lecture will blend "scientific research and popular speculation," he notes, and "will be illustrated with images of real and imaged imagined structures and devices on the atomic scale."
Padowitz, who came to Amherst in 1994, holds a B.S. from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
The Lazerowitz Lectureship is awarded each year to support and encourage junior members of the Amherst College faculty in their scholarly work. A committee headed by the Dean of the Faculty selects the recipient, a member of the faculty below the rank of a full professor, who receives an honorarium and presents a lecture on his or her research.
The Max and Etta Lazerowitz Lectureship was established in 1985 to honor the parents of the late Morris Lazerowitz, emeritus professor of philosophy at Smith College. Professor Alice Ambrose Lazerowitz, also emeritus professor of philosophy at Smith, is an honored guest at the Lazerowitz Lecture each spring.
