AMHERST, Mass.—Amherst College has appointed Reverend Leon Tilson Burrows as Protestant religious advisor to the college. Amherst will share Burrows’s services with Smith College, where he has been appointed Protestant chaplain.

Reverend Burrows, previously the pastor of the East Bethel Baptist Church in Philadelphia, has been serving as an interim religious advisor at Amherst and Smith for the last year. He has degrees in divinity and sacred music from Yale, and a D.Min. degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia.

Since his arrival at Amherst College, where his office is located, Burrows has begun the organization of weekly Protestant religious services on campus, in addition to the Bi-Semester Worship Program, which has offered services in the African-American worship tradition for several years.
