Amherst, MA - Amherst College will honor three high school teachers and an elementary school teacher at Senior Class Exercises at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20.
Nominated by members of the graduating class, the teachers will receive the Phebe and Zephaniah Swift Moore Teaching Award, which recognizes teachers and counselors who have been important in the lives of Amherst students.
This year's recipients are:
- Rembert Herbert, a 1967 graduate of Amherst and an English teacher at Hunter College High School in New York, N.Y., nominated by Nicole Marti '00;
- William Lewis, an English teacher at Lynwood High School in Lynwood, Calif., nominated by Joel Estrada '00;
- George Wolfe, a biology teacher at Wilson Magnet School in Rochester, N.Y., nominated by Joshua Dudman '00E;
- Judy Brooks, a teacher at Pelham School in Pelham, Mass., nominated by Christina Schutz '00.
The Swift Moore Teaching Award is traditionally presented to three high school teachers. This is the first year that a special prize has also been presented to an elementary school teacher.
The Phebe and Zephaniah Swift Moore Teaching Award was first presented in 1997. The awards are chosen by a committee of seniors, faculty and staff from nominations submitted by graduating seniors.
