AMHERST, Mass.-Samuel C. Haynes, assistant director of campus life for student activities at Oswego State University, will become the new assistant dean of students and director of the campus center/student activities at Amherst College on June 12.

"My philosophy is that student activities play an important role in campus life," says Haynes, "and I hope to build on and even enhance that tradition at Amherst." Haynes, who received B.A. and M.A. degrees in English from the State University of New York College at Fredonia, will oversee all aspects of student activities and all programs at the Keefe Campus Center.

The Keefe Campus Center is a popular location at Amherst for entertainment, dining, meetings and "hanging out." The Frontroom hosts entertainment that ranges from nationally known bands to student amateurs. The Campus Center Theater is home to Flics, a weekly popular film series. Schwemm's Gourmet Coffee House serves food and specialty coffees. The Gameroom offers television, a free CD jukebox, billiards, foosball and video games.

As director of the Keefe Campus Center, Haynes will be responsible for the meeting rooms and offices of many student organizations, such as the Social Council, Program Board, Outreach, La Causa, Asian Students Association, Student Government Organization and Women's Center. He also will oversee the college student activities program, which helps students, faculty and administrators work together to develop social, cultural and educational programs to enhance the social and cultural diversity of the campus and provide increased opportunities for students.
