AMHERST, Mass.—Robert Nozick, Pellegrino University Professor at Harvard University, will talk about “The Ultimate Theory of the World” in the Cole Assembly Room in Converse Hall at Amherst College on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 4:30 p.m. Nozick’s talk, sponsored by the Department of Philosophy at Amherst College and the Forry Fund in Philosophy and Science as part of a series on “Science and the Limits of Explanation,” will be free and open to the public. A reception in Converse Hall will follow.
Robert Nozick was born in Brooklyn, attended Columbia College and received his Ph.D. from Princeton University, writing his dissertation on theories of rational decision.
He has written about political philosophy (Anarchy, State and Utopia, 1974); epistemology, personal identity, free will and the foundations of ethics (Philosophical Explanations, 1981); reflections on what is important in life (The Examined Life, 1989); and theories of rational decision and rational belief (The Nature of Rationality, 1993). A collection of essays, Socratic Puzzles, appeared in 1997.
Nozick is a past president of the American Philosophical Association (Eastern Division), a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy and a Senior Fellow of the Society of Fellows at Harvard University.
