AMHERST, Mass.- The seven jazz instructors at Amherst College will present a concert featuring guest trombonist Rob Tapper and vocalist Kristina Ploeger on Friday, Oct. 24, in Buckley Recital Hall at 8:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
The program will include compositions by the performers and by jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Sonny Rollins. Amherst's jazz instructors are Ann Maggs (voice), Genevieve Rose (bass), Claire Arenius (drums), Eugene Uman (piano), Joe Belmont (guitar), Nathan Childers (saxophones) and Bruce Diehl (saxophones).
This event will be the final in a series of coaching and clinics given by Tapper and Ploeger, both on the faculty of Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash. Earlier in the week, both guests will work with students involved in the jazz programs at Amherst and Smith Colleges. Students from the Five Colleges are invited to all events.
The Oct. 24 concert will coincide with Amherst's Inauguration weekend, welcoming new president Anthony W. Marx.
The fall series of jazz events at Amherst College is sponsored by the John Tennant and Elizabeth Collins Adams Fund for Music, the Office of the Dean of Student Activities, the Five College Music Chairs, the Lecture Committee at Amherst College, the Jazz @ Amherst Fund and the Smith College Jazz Ensemble.
