AMHERST, Mass.—Poet, essayist, short story writer and peace activist Marilyn Krysl will give a reading on Monday, April 18, at 8 p.m. at Amherst Books (8 Main St., Amherst, Mass.) Sponsored by the Eastman Fund and the Language and Literature Fund of the Department of English at Amherst College, this event is free and open to the public.
The author of seven books of poetry; three collections of stories; pieces in The Atlantic, The Nation, The New Republic and other journals; and in the collections Best American Short Stories 2000, O. Henry Prize Stories and the Pushcart Prize Anthology, Krysl is former director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Colorado, Boulder. “Krysl's potent, unflinching stories,” according to a New York Times reviewer, “confidently shifting between satire and lyricism, chart how conflict can become catharsis—and, happily, there's nothing accommodating about them.”
A founding editor of the literary journal Many Mountains Moving, Krysl has taught ESL in the People's Republic of China, served as artist in residence at the Center for Human Caring in Denver and worked as a volunteer for human rights organizations in Sri Lanka and Calcutta.
