AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College flute instructor Alison Hale and guitarist Stephen Procter will perform on Friday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. in Buckley Recital Hall in the Arms Music Center at Amherst College. The concert will feature tangos by Astor Piazzolla, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Sonatina and classical period works by Mauro Giuliani and Francesco Molino.

The fiery rhythms and contrasting moods of Piazzolla’s Tango Story capture the essence of tango over the last century as it evolved from the bordello and café to the concert hall. In contrast, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Sonatina for flute and guitar demonstrates the effervescence and piquancy that made him one of the most sought-after Hollywood film composers of the 1940s and ’50s. Giuliani’s Grand Sonata is one of the most popular pieces in the flute and guitar repertoire, combining Italian lyricism with the poise and refinement of the Viennese classical style.

Hale made her Carnegie Hall debut in 1982 and has since performed in major concert halls around the world. She currently plays with the Portland Symphony Orchestra and teaches at Amherst as well as Mount Holyoke College. Procter is well known to New England audiences for his innate ability to interpret the music of Latin America. Procter and Hale have performed together for more than 15 years.

This concert is open to the public at no charge. Seating is by general admission.
