AMHERST, Mass. – The Music at Amherst Series will open its 2008-09 season with the acclaimed Tokyo String Quartet on Friday, Oct. 3, at 8 p.m. in Buckley Recital Hall of the Arms Music Center at Amherst College.
For almost 40 years, the quartet has been captivating audiences and critics with their performances around the world, and members of the group have earned reputations as artists of the highest caliber. In their performance at Amherst, the quartet’s program will include Haydn’s lively and emotive Quartet in G Major, Op. 76, No. 1; Ravel’s exotic and sensual Quartet in F Major; and Beethoven’s Quartet in A Major, Op. 18, No. 5, which encompasses both the profound and the lighthearted.
The Music at Amherst Series will feature four other performances during the season.
On Nov. 1 at 8 p.m., pianist Jeremy Denk will perform Ives’ Concord Sonata and Beethoven’s Hammerklavier.
On Nov. 14 at 8 p.m., German violinist Christian Tetzlaff will perform an unaccompanied program of Bach sonatas and partitas.
On Feb. 7 at 8 p.m,. the Orion String Quartet will perform quartets by Wolf, Webern, Beethoven and Mendelssohn.
On Mar. 8 at 4 p.m., the season will close with pianist Boris Berman’s performance of works by Chopin and Debussy.
