AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst Symphony Orchestra will present its season-opening concert on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 8 p.m. in Buckley Recital Hall in the Arms Music Center at Amherst College. The event will celebrate and welcome the school’s Class of 2013.

The performance will begin with Dmitri Shostakovich’s rousing Festive Overture, continue with the colorful and evocative musical fairy tale Scheherazade by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov and conclude with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto in C Minor. Alicia Ciccone ’11 will perform as solo violinist and concertmaster in Scheherazade, while renowned guest pianist Henry Wong Doe—who gave a stunning performance of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto at Amherst in 2005—will also solo in the Rachmaninoff. Mark Lane Swanson, music director, will conduct.

Tickets are available to the general public for $8, and to senior citizens, students with ID and children under 13 for $4. They will be sold at the door and may be reserved in advance by e-mailing concerts@amherst.edu. Admission for Five College students is free.

For more information on the program, please e-mail Mr. Swanson at mlswanson@amherst.edu.
