AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst Symphony Orchestra makes its New York City debut at the Peter Norton Symphony Space on Monday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the concert may be purchased online at www.symphonyspace.org or by telephoning the Peter Norton Symphony Space box office at 212-864-5400.
The program includes Festive Overture by Shostakovich, Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Piano virtuoso Henry Wong Doe will join the orchestra for the Rachmaninoff. Mark Lane Swanson, Amherst’s music director, will conduct.
Winner of the Audience Favorite prizes at both the Rubinstein and the Busoni International Piano competitions, Henry Wong Doe has performed at Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House and other premier venues around the world. A native of New Zealand, Wong Doe graduated from Juilliard in 2006 with a D.M.A. in Piano Performance; his principal teachers include Evelyne Brancart, Leonard Hokanson, Joseph Kalichstein and Richard Goode. This marks Mr. Wong Doe’s second appearance with the Amherst Symphony Orchestra following his acclaimed performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in 2005.
Based at Amherst College, Mass., the 70-member Amherst Symphony Orchestra is principally composed of Amherst College students and other students from the region. It performs a full season of seven professional-length concerts, musicals, operas and pops each academic year in Buckley Recital Hall of the Arms Music Center on the Amherst campus.
