Amherst Alumni Symphony Orchestra to Hold Inaugural Concert during Homecoming Weekend on Sun. Oct. 24

AMHERST, Mass.— Amherst College Orchestra alumni will join its current student musicians to present the inaugural Amherst Alumni Symphony Orchestra concert during Homecoming Weekend on Sunday Oct. 24, at 1 p.m. in Buckley Recital Hall in the ArmsMusicCenter at AmherstCollege. Prior to the performance, former orchestra president Jonathan Salik ’09 will give an informal talk at 12:45 p.m.

The orchestra will be conducted by Mark Lane Swanson, music director, and Daniel Nesta Curtis ’08. The program will open with the orchestra’s current students accompanying soloist Emily Mackey ’10, violin, in The Lark Ascending, an ethereal romance for orchestra and violin by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Alumni and current students will then join forces to perform Antonin Dvorak’s bucolic yet spirited Eighth Symphony in G major. The concert will last approximately one hour and be performed without intermission.

Amherst alumni interested in participating should contact Swanson at mlswanson@amherst.edu. Rehearsals for the Sunday concert will take place Friday, Oct. 23, from 10 to 11 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 25, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in Buckley Recital Hall.

This concert is open to the public. Tickets can be reserved be e-mailing concerts@amherst.edu or calling 413/542-2195 beginning on Oct. 12. Tickets cost $8 for the general public and $4 for seniors, children and students with valid ID. Admission is free to FiveCollege students.
