AMHERST, Mass.— The Amherst Symphony Orchestra brings fall semester to a close Saturday, December 12, with a program of Viennese classics at 8 p.m. at Buckley Recital Hall in Arms Music Center on the Amherst College campus.
The event opens with the exciting potpourri overture to the operetta Die Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron) by “Waltz King” Johann Strauss, Jr. It continues with senior Jordan Gilbertson ’10 as soloist in the wickedly difficult—yet nostalgic and moving—Concerto for Oboe & Small Orchestra by Richard Strauss, written at the end of the Second World War at the request of an American soldier. It will conclude with Symphony #39 in E-flat major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of his final set of three triumphant works of the genre composed during the summer of 1788.
The general public, as well as the Amherst College community, is cordially invited to attend. Tickets may be reserved by e-mailing concerts@amherst.edu. General admission is $8; tickets cost $4 for seniors, students and children 12 and under. It is free to Amherst and other Five College students.
