News & Events Senior Music Majors’ Original Choral Works to be Performed at Amherst College March 28

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College Department of Music will present “Missa Brevis in E minor,” a music composition thesis by senior Nathan Olson and “Requiem,” a music composition thesis by classmate Andrew Holgate on Sunday, March 28, at 8 p.m. in Buckley Recital Hall in the Arms Music Center at Amherst College. The concert is free and open to the public.

“Missa Brevis in E minor” is a piece in four movements that draws heavily on traditional Western sacred music, while integrating fresh sonorities into the time-honored form. The piece will be performed by an all-student choir made up of students from the Amherst College Choral Society and a cappella groups.

“Requiem”—a religious choral piece for chorus, organ, percussion and solo violin— will feature more than 20 Amherst singers and instrumentalists. The college’s voice instructor, Alan Schneider, will be the tenor soloist.
