AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College Department of Music announces the fall 2010 Homecoming Weekend concert schedule. The Amherst College Jazz Ensemble will perform at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12; the Amherst Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13 and the Amherst College Choral Society will perform at 9 pm on Saturday, Nov. 13. All concerts will be held in Buckley Recital Hall in the Arms Music Center at Amherst College and will require tickets, which may be purchased at registration, at the door, or reserved in advance by calling 413/542-2195 or emailing concerts@amherst.edu.

The Amherst College Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Bruce Diehl, will perform music of Duke Ellington, Jeff Lorber, Billy Strayhorn, Count Basie, Michael Mossman and more. The ensemble will be joined by guest artist Neal Melley, trombone.

The Amherst Symphony Orchestra, directed by Mark Lane Swanson, will perform Gustav Mahler’s first symphony. Mahler's hour-long symphony powerfully depicts the physical and psychological struggles of the journey of human life. He musically paints dawn and birth, bucolic youth, love interrupted by tragedy and crisis and transcendence through personal heroism.

The Amherst College Concert Choir, Women’s Chorus and Men’s Glee Club, all led by director Mallorie Chernin and assistant director Nathan Olson ’10, will be joined by the Madrigal singers, directed by Dana Kaufman ’12, Walker Boyle ’13 and Joseph Taff ’13. The program features works by Charles Ives, Arthur Sullivan, Orlando di Lasso, Eric Whitacre, Moses Hogan and many more. The program will also include traditional college songs.

The box office for all homecoming weekend performances open on Nov. 1. Ticket prices are $10 for the general public, $5 for senior citizens and children 12 and under. Tickets are free to Five College Students with ID.
