On a day when many Americans celebrated the life and work of the Rev.  Martin Luther King, Jr., in song, service and other activities, two Amherst College students participated in a very different yet fitting memorial: They helped lead a conversation about youth violence in nearby Springfield.

Several Amherst College alumni and students provided assistance to Haiti after an earthquake hit Port-au-Prince on Jan. 12, 2010. But Thierry Pauyo ’05, a Harvard Medical School student with deep family roots in Haiti, was there from the beginning.

One year after a massive earthquake struck Haiti, an Amherst College alumna with a key role in monitoring the progress of recovery says there’s reason to be optimistic, even if challenges remain extremely daunting. Meanwhile, students at Amherst continue to contribute their time and resources to help in Haiti, as do many alumni.

AMHERST, Mass.—Harvard University professor Stephen Greenblatt, this year’s John Woodruff Simpson Lecturer at Amherst College and world-renowned scholar of Renaissance literature, will discuss the discovery of an ancient manuscript that “set the world on a new course” in a lecture titled “The Swerve: How the Renaissance Began” at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, in Cole Assembly Room of Amherst’s Converse Hall.
