AMHERST, Mass.—Ashby resident John Carter, chief of police at Amherst College in Amherst, Mass., has been elected director-at-large for the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA). Carter will serve a term of three years starting this June.
“We on campus have long known what a fantastic police chief John is, so it is great to learn that he is also being recognized by his colleagues at a national level,” said Jim Brassord, director of facilities and associate treasurer of campus services. “We are very proud of him.”
Carter was named chief of campus police at Amherst in 1998. He received a B.S. in criminal justice from the University of Lowell and then an M.S. in the same subject from Fitchburg State College. He was an officer for the Townsend, Mass., Police Department from 1986 to 1990 and then served with the Brandeis University Police, first as sergeant and then as detective sergeant, until his appointment at Amherst. He has also held the posts of secretary, vice president and president of MACLEA (the Massachusetts Assoc of LE Administrators).
The IACLEA advances public safety for educational institutions by providing educational resources, advocacy and professional development. Founded in 1958 by 11 college and university security directors, the organization today serves more than 1,200 colleges and universities located in 20 countries. In addition to those institutional memberships, individual memberships are held by campus law enforcement staff members, criminal justice faculty members and municipal chiefs of police; current membership exceeds 2,200.
