Among the hundreds of unusual offerings that fill the Amherst course catalog — classes that focus on food, on monsters, on murder — Professor of Art and the History of Art Joel Upton’s seminar “The Art of Beholding” stands out. In this class, students are not swamped in readings or essays or problem sets; in fact, the course syllabus is not even a full page.

On Sunday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. in Kirby Theater, the College will host its second collection of TEDxAmherstCollege talks. An initiative of the Center for Community Engagement, TEDxAmherstCollege is a student-coordinated series of short speeches by alumni, faculty, a student and others that promote a spread of ideas and interaction between members of different communities.

Participants in a 2014 Diversity Open House get to know one another

This past month, Amherst welcomed seven high school seniors of Native American and Native Hawaiian backgrounds at the College’s first Native Student Open House. The event was a new offshoot of the annual Diversity Open Houses, which give “students with potential to add to the diversity of outlook, background and experience on campus,” according to the Office of Admission.
