On-Campus and Off-Campus Lodging

Registration for Commencement 2020 Housing will open on December 9, 2019

On-campus housing registration is open until May 1, 2020 or until all rooms are reserved, whichever comes first.  Rooms are available on a first come, first serve basis.  Payment is required at the time of registration

Amherst offers residence hall housing at a nominal fee to families of graduating seniors from 1 p.m. Friday of Commencement weekend until 5 p.m. Sunday. The fees are $50 per person, per day with children 12 and under at no charge.  Payment is required at registration. Families and graduating students will receive on-campus housing information in the summer and in the fall with electronic registration to open on December 9, 2019. We encourage families to register electronically at the above link. Registrations must be accompanied by credit card payment at the time of registration. Refunds can be made up to and including Friday, May 1. We are unable to refund payments after May 1. If there are questions, please call Paula Mieczkowski at (413) 542-8269.

Please note that reservations will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Requests for special accommodations, including accessibility can be indicated when submitting the online housing registration form.  Amherst College is committed to accommodating as many requests as possible within the restrictions of the available rooms inventory.  Please note that private restrooms are not available, but some residence halls offer single occupancy and gender inclusive restrooms.  The residence halls are not air-conditioned.  Room keys can be picked up at Commencement Headquarters, and towels, bed linen and pillows are provided. The deadline for on-campus housing registration is May 1, 2020 or when all rooms are reserved, whichever occurs first.

We are able to offer family housing because we have rooms that are vacated by the students from the first, second and third-year classes. Unless employed by the College, all underclass students depart the campus prior to 2 p.m. on May 16. Underclass students are not able to reserve family housing.

Please note, too, that all campus housing (including student housing) must be vacated by 5 p.m. Sunday, so that Facilities can prepare the rooms for Reunion Weekend. Families who need housing before Friday night, as well as families (and students) who need housing beyond 5 p.m. Sunday, are urged to make arrangements with friends off campus or with local hotels as soon as possible, as local lodging fills quickly. There are no extensions for graduating seniors. Seniors staying to work during Reunion week will need to move to designated housing on May 24.

Off-campus lodging can be procured at hotels in Hadley, Northampton, Chicopee, South Deerfield and Holyoke, as well as other locations in Western Massachusetts using the link above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for family housing during the weekend of Commencement? We are able to house the families of graduating students. We are unable to house underclass students during this weekend.

When will the families receive information about housing on campus during the Commencement Weekend? The information will be mailed in late June and again in October. We can take electronic reservations on or after Dec. 9 along with the credit card payment for the rooms.

Can I make reservations on-line and use my credit card? Yes, after Dec. 9.

What if I need special accommodations for members of my family? Please note your special needs on the housing box on the electronic form. We do our best to meet all requests, but housing is limited.

What if I make a reservation and find that I need to cancel? Perhaps my son or daughter has also made the reservation, or my plans have changed. Will I get a refund?  To avoid duplicate room reservations, families of graduating seniors should consult the seniors before making reservations. Families should be near certain of their traveling parties. Refunds will be given only with at least a 24-hour notice of cancellation. Refunds cannot be made after May 1.

Do I need to reserve a room for my graduating senior? No. Seniors will remain in their current rooms until graduation. They must vacate their dormitory rooms by 5 p.m. on Commencement Sunday.

How long can I room at Amherst? Accommodations can be requested for Friday and Saturday. All rooms must be vacated by 5 p.m. on Commencement Sunday.

How will I know that my room reservation has been accepted?  Reservations are acknowledged electronically when the submission is made. Specific room assignment information is available on arrival on campus; unfortunately, because of the constantly changing student needs, we cannot provide information prior to guests' arrival on campus for the Commencement Weekend.

Do I need to bring towels and sheets? All linens are provided by the college, including pillows and blankets.

Where do I check in and get keys? Check-in will be at Commencement Headquarters in the Alumni House. The hours are Friday, 1 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Do you always have sufficient rooms to meet the needs of the visiting families? We suggest that families apply electronically, and as soon as the traveling party is established. While there is a limited number of rooms available, we have been able to accommodate all requests in the past. Guests concerned that they may not receive on-campus lodging, as well as those requiring accommodations before Friday and after 5 p.m. Sunday, may wish to see our list of local lodging. We cannot accept reservations after May 1.
