Swift Moore Nominations for Secondary School Teachers
The nomination period opens in December; deadline for submissions is in Febraury; Swift Moore Committee meets to evaluate submissions in late February. Honorees will be invited to participate in the Commencement ceremony in Spring 2021.
In 1997, Amherst College inaugurated the Phebe and Zephaniah Swift Moore Award program to honor some of this country's outstanding high school teachers. Graduating seniors are invited to nominate a teacher who made an impact on their lives. Students are asked to submit nominations of secondary school teachers deserving of this award, by using the online nomination form. As a separate element of the program, we also hope to honor outstanding teachers who are Amherst graduates.
Nominations for Commencement Speaker and Honorary Members of the Graduating Class
In early May, there was a 24-hour period for online voting for the student commencement speaker. Each graduating senior was able to nominate up to four graduating seniors to deliver a thoughtful and meaningful commencement speech. The graduating seniors who received the most nominations will be invited to participate in the Senior Speak-Off later in May.
Honorary members of the class are also nominated at this time. Nominations were made for up to five people to whom the graduating students wish to express appreciation at the postponed Senior Assembly. Previous recipients have included retiring members of the faculty and staff, as well as employees from the Library, Health Services, Valentine, Facilities and Campus Police.
Traditionally hosted in Johnson Chapel, this year's Senior Speak-Off will be held virtually on Thursday, May 21. Twelve seniors will submit three-minute video recordings representative of the speech that they would deliver at Commencement. Graduating seniors will have 24-hours to view the videos and submit their votes. The student that receives the most votes will be invited to deliver a 10-minute speech at the postponed Commencement in May 2021. The immediate runners-up will deliver brief speeches at the postponed Senior Assembly.
The Senior Assembly for the class of 2020 has been postponed to May 2021, but the academic achievements by members of the graduating class will be announced to campus in May 2020. The remaining features of this event, including the addresses by a distinguished faculty member and two seniors and the presentation of the honorary class members, will occur at the postponed event. The faculty member is chosen by the members of the Senior Commencement Committee and the student speakers are selected by the class during Senior Speak-Off.
