August 29, 2018 It may have been 90+ degrees and muggy on campus on Aug. 28, but that didn’t stop a mammoth—not woolly, thank goodness—from appearing on the quad to greet nearly 500 new Amherst students who had arrived for Orientation.
Homecoming is always a great opportunity to reconnect with Amherst College, but this weekend will also provide a chance to meet the newest face in the family picture: our mammoth.
Sometimes cuddly, sometimes fierce, and often used to connote things wild and ancient, the mammoth lumbers its way through pop culture time and time again.
In the Beneski Museum of Natural History—where students refer to the giant mammoth skeleton on permanent display as “Bebu,” in tribute—the guides were particularly excited to hear about the College’s new mascot.
