Diversity and Inclusion
“I came here for many of the same reasons you did...I came because of its commitment to a student body that reflects the rich diversity of the country, indeed the world. I came, as you did, to contribute in some way to making Amherst even better, and to figuring out what it might mean, here as elsewhere, to take full advantage of the diversity you represent.”
-President Biddy Martin, Commencement Speech 2013
Welcome to Amherst's page on Diversity and Inclusion. Here you will find information on the programs, resources and initiatives that support our diversity efforts.
Every single member of our student body, our faculty and our staff represents diversity in action. Every single one of us has many dimensions—our gender, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, socioeconomic or ethnic or nationality background, race, religious and political values, dreams and aspirations. This is the richness of our community.
We are committed that all members of Amherst College not only feel safe, supported and valued, but also have the opportunity to learn from each other, to question themselves and others, to understand the histories of exclusion and inclusion that have brought us to where we are today, and to work together for a better future.
