This policy is prepared in accordance with Amherst College Plans, Policies and Standard Operating Guidelines, the Amherst College Environmental Health and Safety Committee, and the Chemical Safety Committee.
Amherst College is committed to provide a safe environment for the faculty, staff, students, and visitors who work with and around hazardous materials. The management of hazardous material inventory is crucial to that goal. This policy is written to provide the necessary requirements for the inventory control of hazardous materials in all laboratories, work spaces, facilities, storage areas and other property of Amherst College.
All departments having hazardous materials at Amherst College. Hazardous material would include chemicals, chemical waste, cleaning materials, paints, oils, and other similar items that are present in every building on campus.
Hazardous Material - Hazardous material is defined in 49 CFR, Department of Transportation (DOT), and 29 CFR, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Every department that orders, stores, or uses chemicals must provide a standardized inventory biannually. The chemical inventory report is required by January 15 and July 15 to the Chemical Hygiene Officer. The biannual inventory report will be supplied to the Town of Amherst Fire Department, and to Amherst College Human Resources by the Environmental Health and Safety Manager. It is preferred that the inventory be supplied on a floppy disk, if possible, to allow creation of a consolidated report to the Town.
The department chemical inventory must contain the material name, location (room or laboratory is sufficient), the approximate mass or volume of material on hand, the expiration date of the material, if any, and finally the National Fire Prevention (NFPA) code for the compound. For consistency, the format of next section should be followed as closely as possible .
