Elevated Lift / Ladder Safety Program

For Architects / Designers / Engineers and Inspectors

This program is to properly assist non-construction companies gain access to elevated levels and surfaces for purposes of evaluation and inspection. This program is not applicable for construction or repair work.

The individual signing below acknowledges that they are employed by a company contracted by the College and carry the appropriate certifications and insurance. The company shall indemnify, defend and hold harmless Amherst College, including the employees of all liability, claims, losses and damages arising from their negligent acts or errors (including attorney’s fees) when using ladders and lifts provided by Amherst College.

The undersigned shall agree to all the provisions of this program prior to use of elevated platforms and ladders belonging to the College.

For the above referenced companies, Amherst College will provide, through the Carpentry Shop, inspected Type I or IA fiberglass ladders. When applicable, the College will permit the use of a third party inspected and certified elevated work platform, including our 25 and 40’ Upright, JLG or scissor lifts, provided the intended user can provide proof of training, and is accompanied by a qualified Amherst College employee.

Ladder Requirements

  • The person using the ladder is responsible for identifying the size of ladder required. Note that standing on the top 2 steps of a step ladder or top 3 rungs of a straight or extension ladder is prohibited.
  • When attempting to gain access to an elevated surface such as an attic, platform or roof a straight ladder shall be used and must extend at least 5 rungs above the intended elevation.
  • Step ladders shall not be used as a straight ladder. They must be fully open with spreaders locked when used.
  • Persons using ladders shall…
    1. always place the ladder on a level, solid, clean and dry, non-slip surface
    2. face the ladder when ascending or descending, and keep their belt buckle (at all times) between the ladder beams/rails
    3. shall maintain a minimum of 2 point, preferably 3 point contact with the ladder at all times.
    4. stabilize a ladder greater that 8’ in height by tying off, using a spotter or providing some other type of fall protection.
    5. not place a ladder in front of doors or near occupants unless a person is posted or area is marked with caution tape to warn potential users of the door that a hazard exists.
    6. place all extension ladders at the proper angle (1:4)
      • 1’ out from the base of the wall for each 4’ in height
    7. properly secure all extension ladders by tying the halyard (rope), after raising the ladder to the appropriate height.
    8. immediately discontinue use of any damaged or defective ladders and notify the Carpentry Shop supervisor or his/her designee.

Elevated Work Platforms (Genie, JLG, Upright and Scissor Lifts)

  • The individual must first show proof of OSHA Compliant Elevated Work Platform Training, and shall be accompanied by an Amherst College “qualified” Elevated Work Platform employee at all times.
