Thermal Profile

In January 2019 the Amherst College Board of Trustees approved a Climate Action Plan that set a goal for carbon neutrality by 2030.  This project will transform our campus energy infrastructure from a traditional fossil fuel powered steam system to a renewable system consisting of ground source (“geothermal”) electric heat pumps and a low-temperature-hot water and chilled water distribution network.  The first phase, scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2020, is a comprehensive master plan that will analyze current and future campus energy needs, explore design and phasing options, establish recommended solutions and define a path forward. Detailed design will follow later in 2020 with construction scheduled to begin in 2021-2022.
