The Environmental Health and Safety Manager is Richard A. Mears. The office of Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for the health and well-being of the faculty, staff, students and visitors at Amherst College, as well as the environment in which they work. The office of Environmental Health and Safety works with local, state and federal regulatory agencies including the Town of Amherst, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on issues that affect the College and our community.

Amherst College operates a comprehensive health and safety program which includes but is not limited to inspections, training, and hazard mitigation of asbestos, blood-borne pathogens, building, electrical and fire safety, environment issues, ergonomics, hazardous materials and waste, lead and radioactive materials.

Amherst College utilizes the team approach for the identification and correction of hazardous conditions by working with three joint labor-manangement health and safety committees, as well as the biological, chemical and radiation safety committees.

The Environmental Health and Safety Department is also supported by the Chemical Hygiene Officer at Merrill Science. As required by OSHA, the Chemical Hygiene Officer Dr. Jon Sanborn is directly responsible for the safe operations of all laboratories in our teaching and research facilities at Life and Merrill Sciences, Pratt Museum and other sites across campus that store, transport and use chemicals.

Through policies, procedures and training our goal is to provide the Amherst College Community with a healthy and safe working environment, as well as additional awareness and training in support of the environment.
