Mid-Year Check In 2021

The 2021-2022 Mid-Year Check In period is Monday, November 15th to Friday, December 31th. While not required, the process is encouraged, as it provides opportunities for focused growth and development. 

End-of-Year Extended College Closure Dates

As noted in a message from Biddy, the College will shut down the week of December 27, 2021. The result is an additional four days of paid time off (Monday, December 27, through Thursday, December 30) for staff, plus the previously scheduled holidays on Friday, December 24, and Friday, December 31. While the previous week, December 20-23, will remain a work week, we are encouraging those who wish to have a longer break, or who must work during the shutdown, to use their accrued time off then. As always, staff should consult with their supervisor/department chair for scheduling approval.

Although we will minimize the need for work during the shutdown, staff members who must work then—for one-time needs like Workday and preparation for “J-term,” plus essential staff in dining, custodial services, and other areas—will receive closure pay, which is equal to (2x) pay for non-exempt hourly employees and equivalent time off for exempt employees. Supervisors will work with those impacted to make alternative arrangements.

Employee Referral Bonus for Dining Services and Community Safety Assistant Job Referrals

  • Given today's challenging labor market—in the food and hospitality sectors in particular—and small pool of job seekers in general, the College has created a referral bonus program for any Amherst staff member who helps Dining Services recruit new talent.
  • This bonus program will also apply to the newly-created Community Safety Assistant (CSA) jobs, since these positions will serve a crucial function in the College's safety plans for the coming year.
  • Employees will receive a $1,000 award for referring a prospective staff member for an advertised, open vacancy in a casual, full- or part-time Dining Services or CSA position. The bonus will be subject to applicable payroll tax withholdings.
  • The referral bonus will be paid out once the new staff member completes one month of service.

Important Announcements

Vacation Carryover Update

Once again, vacation carry-overs will not be restricted as of June 30, 2021. As of December 31, 2021, vacation balances will be limited to no more than one full year’s allotment PLUS vacation time earned from July 1 through December 31, 2021.

In effect, this represents a maximum balance of one-and-a-half years of vacation accrual. By June 30, 2022, we will return to the usual policy of a maximum carry-over of one year’s vacation allotment. This will be the final extension of this temporary policy.

COVID-19 Vaccine Exemption Information

Amherst College is requiring that all staff and faculty be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  It is our hope that these vaccination requirements for all colleagues will provide additional protection for everyone in our community.
