Long Term Care Insurance for New Hires

As a regular employee hired on or after November 7, 2011, and working at least 30 hours per week, you are eligible to apply for voluntary long-term care insurance coverage (LTC) for yourself and certain family members.  Please take prompt action if this new benefit meets your needs as the enrollment period for this coverage will run through December 31, 2012.

Long-term care planning is part of the life-cycle planning process, yet it’s missing from most individual’s retirement planning.  A primary goal of this communication is to provide education on a topic that could threaten your financial security and quality of life.  To learn more about LTC view the information at these links:   

Simplified Underwriting and premium discounts are aspects of the long-term care benefit program.  You have a one-time Simplified Underwriting period that will end on December 31, 2012.  Employees age 65 and under receive a one-time opportunity to purchase insurance protection with simplified underwriting.  This means you have fewer medical questions to answer.  The insurance company does check your medical information, but they consider fewer factors.  Being issued a policy is not guaranteed as you still need good health to get this coverage.  However, it is easier to obtain than if you applied on your own.

Employees over age 65, and eligible spouses, partners, parents and parents-in-law can apply for coverage with a Modified Underwriting process, which generally is less rigorous than if you applied for this type of benefit on your own.  Extended family members are also entitled to premium discounts.

If you decide to enroll at a later time you would be subject to Modified Underwriting guidelines.

Tucker & Shepley Benefits and Insurance helps to administer our program with MedAmerica, the current insurance carrier.  Amherst College will sponsor several long-term care workshops conducted by Tucker & Shepley.  You are encouraged to attend one of these workshops even if you do not think you need long term care insurance, as the information presented is very helpful.  At the workshops, you can receive cost information and request to meet with a representative to discuss your situation privately.  You may also contact Joe Imparato at (617) 342-7223.
