Inclement Weather Conditions

On occasion, adverse weather conditions may cause employees to be concerned about safety in traveling to or from work, depending on the distance of travel, the hazards of driving, the availability of public transportation or a number of other subjective factors. In such cases, employees will need to make their own judgments about whether to stay home or to leave work early, after consultation with their supervisors. An employee's decision, based on individual circumstances, will be respected. In the above circumstances, hours missed will be charged against an employee's excused time, vacation time or floating holidays.

On rare occasions, when weather conditions are especially severe, the College may delay opening, close for the day, or close early. In these circumstances, there will be no charge to employees for the time lost. For early closing, the Office of Human Resources will inform the College community of the decision and the time of closing. Once a decision has been made to close early, Human Resources will update the emergency weather line (542-7669); send a broadcast voice-mail to departments' main telephone lines and email department representatives. For delayed openings or when the College is to be closed for the day, Amherst College will notify WGGB TV 40, WWLP TV 22, and WHYN 93.1 FM, AM 560 by 6:30 a.m. on the day of a storm. In addition, employees may call the Amherst College emergency weather line at (413) 542-SNOW (7669) and the toll-free number (888) 289-1049 for updated information about possible schedule changes.

Employees designated by their department heads as providing non-deferrable or essential services should report to work, or remain on duty, even though the College is closed. Such employees who are non-exempt will be compensated with an additional amount of pay on an hour for hour basis for all regular hours worked during the delay or beyond the early closing. All work beyond the regular shift will be compensated in accordance with the overtime policy.
