Certificate Series 2014

Leadership Development Program: Essentials of Effective Supervision

Though the program is designed as an integrated curriculum, participants may enroll in individual sessions. To receive a certificate, people need to attend all seven sessions.

This program is designed for both first-time and experienced supervisors, as well as all staff interested in developing supervisory and leadership skills. Current supervisors wanting a refresher or to update specific skills are encouraged to attend.

This seven-part series focuses on a comprehensive set of skills needed to build and maintain strong and effective relationships and to produce successful performance results. The foundations of this series are learning about flexible leadership styles (Situational Leadership), understanding how to work with and get the most out of different behavioral styles (DiSC profile), exploring the stages of team development and learning how to effectively use different conflict styles (Thomas-Kilman instrument).

The seven sessions will review the following content:

  • –leadership and supervision, understanding flexible leadership styles (Situational Leadership)
  • –overview of performance management and goal setting
  • –appreciating and valuing different work and communication styles (DiSC Behavioral Styles)
  • –exploring what makes a high performing team, understanding the stages of team development
  • –understanding conflict styles and exploring how to manage conflict effectively (Thomas-Kilman Instrument)
  • – how to plan, prepare and facilitate great meetings
  • –understanding how to use bystander techniques at work to address inappropriate behaviors
  • –understanding the supervisor’s role in preventing harassment
  • –legal liabilities: hiring and interviewing, supervisory responsibilities and legal updates

The content for this series may expand in 2014 by including one more session. This webpage will be updated once the new content is finalized.
