Student Employment and Remote Work

Student employment at Amherst College is limited to those individuals who are physically located in the United States at the time of employment.  Specifically, individuals must be located in the states of Massachusetts and/or Connecticut.

Due to the complexities of state and international tax laws and employment regulations (specific to the location where the work is being performed), the College will not allow students who are outside the United States (regardless of citizenship), or outside of Massachusetts/Connecticut, to engage in student employment.

Questions should be referred to the Student Employment Office (seo@amherst.edu).

Are you an F-1 or J-1 student and wondering if you’re eligible to work on-campus?

F-1 Students

As an F-1 student, you may work on-campus at Amherst College during the academic year up to 20 hours per week (and full-time during vacation periods and summer/January while still a student).

You may also be eligible to work on-campus at one of the other Five Colleges or Five Colleges, Inc.  Because Amherst College is educationally affiliated with the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and Five Colleges, Inc., on-campus employment at these sites may be permissible IF:

  1. The position is related to your course of study, or
  2. You will be participating in cultural exchange.

Please note that you must consult with the Office of Immigration Services (OIS) before accepting a Five College position as on-campus employment.  Written authorization from the OIS is required.

J-1 Exchange Student Eligibility

Exchange students in J-1 status may work on campus, though not until an employment authorization letter has been issued by the OIS for a particular position.  With permissions, you may work on-campus at Amherst College during the academic year up to 20 hours per week (and full-time during vacation periods and summer/January while still a student).
