What is a student visa and why do I need one?

Generally, a citizen of a non-US country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. If you would like to study as a full-time student in the United States, you will generally need a student visa. Your study plans will determine whether you need an F visa or a J visa.
