The Office of Institutional Research provides the president, senior administrators, and faculty committees with information that is used to evaluate existing and proposed policies, programs, and goals, and to inform decision-making. These data include historical and current information about Amherst, comparisons to peer institutions, and summaries of qualitative and quantitative feedback gathered from faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni.  The office coordinates college reporting to the federal Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and provides data to selected publishers of college guides.

The office works cooperatively with a wide range of departments and units, offices including the Offices of the Dean of the Faculty, Student Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion, Admission, and Financial Aid and the Departments of Advancement and Information Technology, to support the mission of the college to educate exceptional students of all backgrounds so that they may seek, value, and advance knowledge, engage the world around them, and lead principled lives of consequence.
