Set up spam filter in Outlook Web App

How to set up spam filter in Outlook Web App.

IT has an automated system that scans all incoming emails for spam-like qualities. Emails above a certain threshold have the phrase {SPAM?} added to the subject line. You can set up a rule telling the email server how to handle such messages.

Instructions:
  1. Log into your Amherst email using Outlook Web App (http://exchange.amherst.edu).
  2. In the upper-right, click Options, then Create an Inbox rule.
  3. Click New. From the "When the message arrives, and:" drop-down menu, select "It includes these words in the subject."
  4. In the box labeled "Type words or phrases here" enter (exactly!) {SPAM?} and then click the green plus sign.
  5. Click OK.
  6. From the "Do the following:" drop-down menu, select "Move the message to folder."
  7. From the list of folders in your mailbox, select Deleted Items and then click OK
  8. Click Save.  If you get a warning message asking if you want to proceed, click Yes.

The system will create a rule named "Subject contains '{SPAM?}'. From now on, any message that contains that word in the subject will be automatically routed to your Deleted Items folder, even when you are not logged into your email. Once in Deleted Items you can review the messages for false positives or you can simply empty your Deleted Items folder to permanently delete the spam emails.
