Windows Computers Install/Update Java

Introduction

Instructions to install or update Java for Windows computers.

The Java website provides a very useful FAQ for Installing, Updating, Configuring and Removing Java for Windows XP, VISTA, and Windows 7 for 32-bit or 64-bit systems (external link to java.com).

Instructions: 

INSTALL Java 7.x

  1. First, make sure your Operating System is updated. Click the Windows Start Button and select Settings then Control Panel. Click Windows Update in the Control Panel list.
  2. Next, to install Java go to the Java website: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp. Click to download the appropriate version for your Windows operating system. Click the link just to the right of the red arrow icon to get the download.
  3. Download and then run the update, clicking Yes, OK, and Install as prompted. Make sure to uncheck any box for installing the Ask Toolbar. You do not want to install the Ask Toolbar, only Java.
  4. If you get a message saying you have already installed the update and your system is current then no further action is needed.

update java for Windows XP

  1. Go to the Windows Start Button and select Settings then Control Panel.
  2. Click Java in the Control Panel list, it has an icon of a coffee cup with steam. 
  3. Select the Update tab then click the Update Now button.
  4. Click Yes to allow changes.
  5. Download and then run the update, clicking Yes, OK, and Install as prompted. Make sure to uncheck the box for installing the Ask Toolbar. You do not want to install the Ask Toolbar, only the Java update.
  6. If you get a message saying you have already installed the update and your system is current then no further action is needed.

update java for Windows 7

  1. Go to the Windows Start Button and select Control Panel.
  2. In the upper right corner, make sure that View By: is set to Small Icons. If needed, change the view by selecting Small Icons from the View By: drop-down list.
  3. Click Java (32-bit) in the Control Panel list, it has an icon of a coffee cup with steam. 
  4. Select the Update tab then click the Update Now button.
  5. Click Yes to allow changes.
  6. Download and then run the update, clicking Yes, OK, and Install as prompted. Make sure to uncheck the box for installing the Ask Toolbar. You do not want to install the Ask Toolbar, only the Java update.
  7. If you get a message saying you have already installed the update and your system is current then no further action is needed.

DO NOT update, disable or uninstall Java on any classroom, computer center or lab computers. IT manages the versions of Java and web browsers installed on these computers. The computers are monitored for malware and IT will handle any malware issues that occur.
