Windows Manual VPN Setup

How to manually set up a VPN connection in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 if you cannot use the automatic VPN client provided by the college.

Windows 7 | Windows 8 | Windows 10

Instructions: 

Some users not on the Amherst network who are using Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 computers cannot download and install the automatic VPN client. If you try and cannot download the client, use the following instructions to configure the VPN setup without the client. 

 

Windows 7

  1. Go the Windows Start button then Control Panel.
  2. In the upper right corner, set View by: to Small icons.
  3. From the list select Network and Sharing Center.
  4. In the section Change your networking settings, select Set up a new connection or network.
  5. Select Connect to a workplace then click Next.
  6. Select No, create a new connection then click Next.
  7. Click Use my Internet connection (VPN).
  8. For Internet address: enter one of the following  as applicable:
    • vpnstudent.amherst.edu – Student VPN access
    • vpnconnect.amherst.edu – Staff & Faculty general-purpose VPN access
    • vpnfirewall.amherst.edu – Access to resources behind the administrative firewall
  9. For the Destination Name: enter Amherst Student VPN, Amherst Connect VPN, or Amherst Firewall VPN, as applicable. Then click Next.
  10. Enter your Amherst user name and password.
    Do not opt to show characters or remember password.
    Skip entering Domain.
  11. Click Connect.
  12. While your computer attempts to make the connection, you get the option to skip connecting. Click the Skip button.
  13. When you get the message that the connection is ready for use, click Close.
  14. You'll be returned to the Network and Sharing Center. In the upper left, click the Change adapter settings link.
  15. Right click on the connection you just created and select Properties.
  16. On the connection properties screen, click the Security tab.
    • Under Type of VPN, select Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with iPsec (L2TP/IPSEC).
    • Click the Advanced button and check the option Use preshared key for authentication.
    • In the Key field, enter
      amherstvpn
      Note: the field name is case sensitive and must be all lower case letters.
    • Click OK, then click OK again to finish configuring your VPN connection.
  17. Back on the Network Connections window, right-click on the connection you just configured and select Create Shortcut.
  18. Click OK in the dialogue window asking if you would like the shortcut to be placed on your desktop.

Windows 8

  1. Open Control Panel, either by searching in the Metro interface, or by right clicking on the Start button in Windows 8.1. In the upper right corner, set View by: to Small icons. Then from the list select Network and Sharing Center.
  2. From the section Change your networking settings, select Set up a new connection or network.
  3. Select Connect to a workplace then click Next.
  4. Click Use my Internet connection (VPN).
  5. For Internet address: enter one of the following as applicable:
    • vpnstudent.amherst.edu – Student VPN access
    • vpnconnect.amherst.edu – Staff & Faculty general purpose VPN
    • vpnfirewall.amherst.edu – Access resources behind the administrative firewall
  6. For the Destination Name: enter Amherst VPN Student, Amherst VPN Connect, or Amherst VPN Firewall, as applicable. Then click Create.
  7. In the upper left of the Network and Sharing Center, click the Change adapter settings link.
  8. Right click on the connection you just created and select Properties.
  9. On the connection properties screen, click the Security tab.
  10. Under Type of VPN, select Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with iPsec (L2TP/IPSEC).
  11. Click the Advanced button and check the option Use preshared key for authentication.
  12. In the Key field, enter
    amherstvpn
    Note: the field name is case sensitive and must be all lower case letters.
  13. Click OK.
  14. Click Allow these protocols and check Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2).Then click OK.
  15. Back on the Network Connections window, right-click on the connection you just configured and select Create Shortcut.
  16. Click OK in the dialogue window asking if you would like the shortcut to be placed on your desktop. 

Windows 10

  1. In the Search box on the taskbar, enter VPN.
  2. Click Change virtual private networks (VPN).
  3. Click Add a VPN connection.
  4. Enter one of the following as the server address for the type of VPN connection you want:
    • vpnstudent.amherst.edu – Student VPN access
    • vpnconnect.amherst.edu – Staff & Faculty general purpose VPN
    • vpnfirewall.amherst.edu – Access resources behind the administrative firewall
  5. Click Save.
  6. Under the heading Related Settings, click Change adaptor options.
  7. Right click on the VPN connection you created, which will include Amherst in the name, then click Properties.
  8. Click the Security tab.
  9. Click Advanced settings.
  10. Select Use preshared key for authentication.
    For Key: enter amherstvpn
    Note: the field name is case sensitive and must be all lower case letters.
  11. Click OK.
  12. Back on the Security tab, select Allow these protocols then select Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2).
  13. Click OK.
