Student and visitor owned telephones:
Amherst College does not provide telephone service inside dormitory rooms.
Procedures for calling on- or off-campus from any telephone not provided by Amherst College will vary with the type of service being provided. Examples:
• Residential telephone service from Verizon does not permit 4-digit dialing for inside calls, nor does it require a leading “9” for outside calls, because the notion of “inside” and “outside” calls does not exist with residential phone service from Verizon.
• Cell phones acquired with a 413 area code and a local exchange will require 7-digit dialing for both on-campus and Amherst-area local calls.
• Cell phones acquired with a non-413 area code or a non-local exchange will require 10-digit dialing for both on-campus and Amherst-area local calls.
• Computer-generated telephone calls, known as VoIP calls, may have yet even different dialing instructions that vary by provider.
Consult your service provider for specific dialing instructions for the type of telephone you purchased, lease or use from that provider.
Please, in advance of an emergency , learn how to place emergency calls from the type of telephone you have selected and/or the type of telephone that you may be apt to use while at Amherst College.
