IT Services

Available Software

The Available Software table provided below lists the software that Amherst College IT Department makes available to the campus community, often on behalf of individual departments. The table also includes open-source freeware or shareware software recommended by IT and available for download from the Internet.

Methods to install software include the following and this information is summarized in the table column Source:

  • Download from the Software network drive with the Windows option Winsoft or the Macintosh option Macsoft. Some software is available only to faculty and staff using College-owned computers.
  • Download using the Mac Self Service software delivery system, learn more about how to enroll your Mac for Self Service. Mac Self Service is available only to faculty and staff using College-owned computers.
  • CDs or media
  • Deployment by IT Support Services using the Kace (Windows) or Casper (Mac) software management systems.
  • Appointment with and installation by Academic Technology Services (ATS).

To use the Software network drive for Windows or Mac, Mac Self Service, or for deployment or installation by IT Support Services or Academic Technology Services your computer must be on-campus. Also, an Ethernet wired Internet connection is required, you cannot use wireless or Wi-Fi. Last if you have a laptop, it is best to make sure the laptop with is plugged and not using battery power for software installation. Usually it will be necessary to close all applications including email and web browsers. Often you will need to restart your computer to complete the software installation.

Software installed on public-use computers in the computer centers/labs/classrooms is indicated in the table column IT Facilities Availability. Use of software purchased by individual departments and only managed by IT may be limited to use in certain facilities.

Software that can be installed on personally-owned computers, such as software for download from the Internet (shareware/freeware), is described in the table column Individual Availability.

IT is required to enforce licensing limits for some software. We do this by using network license servers, KeyServer, and/or hardware keys. Any such limitations are described in the table column Licensing.

To install and use any KeyServed program, you must have installed on your computer the Amherst KeyServer client software KeyClient 7. Most College-owned computers will be provided with this software installed. If needed, use the KeyClient 7 Install software available for download from the Software drive. When off-campus, to use network license served software such as KeyServed software, you must establish an Amherst VPN connection.

The software is organized in the following groups:
