Faculty, staff, and students have a number of options for publishing content on the World-Wide Web, ranging from relatively easy-to-use pages on the Amherst College website (www.amherst.edu) that you can create using familiar editing tools, to sophisticated sites with the latest bells and whistles that are under your complete control.

  1. All faculty and staff automatically have a professional page on the Amherst Website, which you can use to describe your role at the college. You can find it at the Web address https://www.amherst.edu/people/facstaff/username/, where username is your Amherst College username.
  2. You can request a personal page on the Amherst Website, where you can describe your personal interests, family, pets, etc. It would be located at the Web address https://www.amherst.edu/users/U/username/, where U is the first initial of your last name and username is your Amherst College username.
  3. You can also request a WordPress site for individual or group projects, including class projects. WordPress lets you easily create a professional-looking website for blogs, e-magazines, creative writing collections, etc., using a number of different themes and styles.
  4. If you have more sophisticated Web development skills, you can request a traditional website for individual or group projects. Out-of-the-box you will have standard features such as the server-side language PHP, the Apache webserver, and the MySQL database server, and you can create your site with tools such as Dreamweaver.

For the last two options, the website would typically be located at a Web address such as https://username.people.amherst.edu/ or https://project.sites.amherst.edu/, but could also be assigned to a non-Amherst College address.

Need a project more sophisticated than options 1 – 3, but don’t have the skills for the last one? If it’s for a College purpose, the Web Services Group may be able to develop a Web application. Otherwise, you might employ a student with the skills to do the job.

More information about these options are provided below; to request a webpage other than the first one, contact the Help Desk.
