Role of the Ombuds Office

The Ombudsperson at Amherst College is an objective and confidential resource that exists to help faculty, administrators and staff explore concerns and receive assistance in resolving conflicts. Services can range from the clarification of College policy, the informal mediation of sensitive interpersonal issues or providing conflict management skills training and coach services to individual or groups.  Although the Ombudsperson reports directly to the President, she works independently of all administrative and academic offices to promote fair conflict management systems, to identify harmful problems or trends that may impact equity and fairness and to suggest where attention should be directed to address these issues.

The Ombudsperson provides an independent, neutral point of view in an informal and confidential environment.

The Ombudsperson subscribes to, the Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics of The International Ombudsman Association (see Guiding Principles & Standards of Practice).
