If you have taken time off from Amherst, we are eager to welcome you back and want to make sure you have all the information you need to make the transition a smooth one. The Readmission process has a few steps and deadlines that you should be aware of. Please read this page in full and be sure to check your Amherst email account regularly as you proceed through the readmission process, so as not to miss any important correspondence from us.

Here's the basic overview:

Step 1: Submit the Readmission Webform

  • The deadline to request readmission for the spring semester is October 15th.
  • The deadline to request readmission for the fall semester is March 1st.
  • Take the first step in your readmission process by submitting the readmission webform
    • After submitting the readmission webform, you will be provisionally readmitted and eligible to participate in the roomdraw process and preregister for courses. It is your responsibility to be in contact with Residential Life/Housing and your Academic Advisor to do these things.
    • Submitting the webform is not the end of the process. You must still submit all required documentation for your leave type (see below) and go through all necessary steps in the readmission process. If you do not submit all required documentation, or your documentation does not meet the standards set by the readmission policy, you will be denied readmission for the current cycle. You may then apply for readmission for the next semester.
  • If you miss the October 15th or March 1st deadlines, you may put forward a late petition by submitting the same readmission webform.
    • Late petitions are due on December 13th for the fall semester, and April 27th during the spring semester. Note that all supporting documentation for late petitions is due by this deadline as well (the lone exception is Readiness to Return documention for medical leaves, which is due by June 1st in the spring semester).
    • Late petitions for readmission are not encouraged, since you will not be eligible to participate in the roomdraw process or preregister for courses due to annual timelines of our campus partners. On-campus housing cannot be guaranteed, and you may be put on a wait-list to be housed after everyone who did meet the deadline. You will not receive information about pre-registration or be able to pre-register.
    • See the full readmission timeline here.

Step 2: Submit Supporting Documentation

Refer to the requirements below and any correspondence from your class dean to understand the additional steps you must take to complete your readmission process.

  • Voluntary Leave
    • If required in the letter of leave from your class dean, arrange for an official transcript to be sent to the Amherst College Registrar, as soon as it becomes available after completion of your coursework, to document that you have satisfied any academic conditions established for your return.
    • Send by email to osa-studentenrollment@amherst.edu a personal statement. Be sure to address the specific personal statement prompts for voluntary leave, which can be found here
    • Once you have completed the necessary requirements for your return, we will contact you to arrange a readmission telephone interview. In order to ensure a smooth process, we will need all of the documentation noted above prior to your readmission interview.
